Third generation partnership project (3GPP) is a standards body that is responsible for the major cellular telecommunication standards used to fuel cellular communication around the world. The latest standards release from 3GPP (Release 15) unleashed 5G new radio (NR) non-standalone (NSA) with enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) features that add additional sub-6 GHz frequency bands and introduced new NSA millimeter-wave frequency bands. While beneficial for the massive consumer market, industrial applications are also ripe for replacing physical cables with wireless links.
Release 15 focused on mobile broadband, while Release 16 is focused on vertical use cases, mainly the factory use cases. The goal is to enable the replacement of wired communication infrastructure in an industrial environment, but reliability is essential. This includes ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC) and massive machine-type communications (mMTC) features, with enhance mobile broadband (eMBB) features for stand-alone (SA) new radio (NR) being targeted for 3GPP Release 17. Other areas of focus for Release 16 is for NR-based access to unlicensed spectrum, and other 5G efficiency enhancements.
5G Efficiency Enhancements
• Interference Mitigation
•5G Self-organizing Networks (SON)
•Enhanced Multi-input Multi-output (eMIMO)
•Location and Positioning
•Power Consumption
•Enhanced Dual Connectivity (eDual Connectivity)
•Device Capabilities Exchange
•Mobility Enhancements
In 2018 Release 16 studies were planned. The goal of these studies is to investigate and determine appropriate specifications and standards for cellular communication for the targeting applications.
